what is 11th grade avid? This 11th grade class is taken during a critical time for students, both in their academic and AVID classes. The 1st semester will continue the standard AVID curriculum, keeping a notebook and taking Cornell-style notes in their academic classes, as well as participating in the bi-weekly tutorial process.
This year, the class will include an extra day of focus study groups in the middle of the week. It will increase support for their academic classes, as many students are enrolled in their first Advanced Placement or Honors classes, in an attempt to increase college acceptance rates and prepare students for college coursework. In addition to being exposed to sample essays of personal statements and scholarship essays, students will actually use their newly developed skills to write their first scholarship essay. Students will also read a college-level book, Nickel & Dimed in America, about the financial hardships and social challenges the working-class face, in an attempt to underscore the importance of a college degree. The 2nd semester will renew its focus on the Personal Statement for college applications, and continue to review examples of student essays. Students will write their personal statement, which will go through extensive peer and self-editing so that, at a glance, these students’ stories will paint a clear picture of themselves and their lives. They will also spend an enormous amount of time preparing for the SAT, and registering for and taking the SAT in the spring. The year will end with a heavy focus on their academic and Advanced Placement coursework. |
