10TH GRADE AVID
This 10th grade class is taken during a critical time for students, both in their academic and AVID classes. Also, 10th graders need to prepare for MYP (Middle Years Program). The 1st semester will continue the standard AVID curriculum, keeping a notebook and taking Cornell-style notes in their academic classes, as well as participating in the bi-weekly tutorial process. This year, the class will use their extra days preparing for the PSAT (Practice Scholastic Assessment Test). Students take the PSAT this year to prepare for the SAT their 11th grade year. To prepare for this test students create Khan Academy accounts to prepare for the rigour. Khan Academy provides practice problems and lessons about the material that is covered in the PSAT. Along with receiving practice, they also get to learn they layout of the test. After the PSAT is taken, other assignments are being introduced to the students. They will begin to have AVID Weekly Articles. These articles range from different academic topics. A couple things need to be done to these articles which is referred to as marking the text. First, they number the paragraphs so they can refer back to the text. Then, key words are circled, author’s claims are underlined, and unknown words are boxed. During 2nd semester, the students will begin to read a novel titled The Absolute Diary of a Part Time Indian. This novel includes topics/characteristics like hopefulness, optimism, and working hard. All kinds of characteristics that are important to learn about in order to prepare our students for life. After they finish reading the book, students will be given a project for them to complete. This year is the second year that our 11th grade students will be going on a 3-day field trip. This field trip includes a two night stay and three days of college touring. The students will be traveling to San Diego. Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. During the stops in these cities, students will visit different colleges and participate in a fun activity. |
