what is avid?AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system that is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The AVID system accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional development, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

AVID began at North in 1990. Since then, thousands of students have realized their college dreams by participating in AVID at North. Today, North's AVID program boasts some very impressive statistics. Each year, over 95% of AVID seniors earn acceptances to at least one four-year university. Currently, there are North AVID alum across the United States, and of course throughout the California State and University of California college systems. With 19 sections of the AVID elective this year on campus, North's AVID program serves over 500 students across campus. That is 22% of the school's population participating. Furthermore, at North, AVID is not just an elective class, it is teaching methodology. AVID teaching strategies are found in content area classes throughout campus, and the college-going culture is alive and well at North, thanks in part to the AVID program.
In February 2013, John W. North's AVID program became the 125th National Demonstration school in the world.
