Greg SchiveAVID CoordinatorGreg Schive is a product of Riverside Unified. He went to Arlington High School, graduating in 1988. After leaving high school, he went to Riverside Community College where his primary goal to participate in RCC’s award winning Marching Tiger Band. 12 long years later, he transferred to CSU San Bernardino where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. Greg also has a Master’s degree in Cross Cultural Curriculum Development from National University.
Greg has been the AVID coordinator at North since 2004, having taught all four grade levels. He has been the primary AVID Senior Seminar teacher since 2008. In addition to AVID Seniors, he teaches International Baccalaureate (IB) Economics. For the past four years, Greg has also worked for AVID Center as a staff developer at various AVID Summer Institutes across California, and presented at the AVID National Conference in Dallas in 2016. Greg is married to Christine Schive, North’s International Baccalaureate program coordinator. They have three boys, two of whom are current North students; one in IB and one in AVID. When Greg and Christine are not working on AVID and IB tasks, you can typically find them near a football field watching their sons on the field, in both football and band, or at the soccer fields. |
Katja DumancicAVID Elective TeacherKatja Dumancic grew up in Croatia. Katja earned her Bachelor’s of Arts in Math Education from Brigham Young University inn Idaho. She then attended National University where she earned her Master’s in Teaching and an emphasis on Ed Tech. Katja has been employed as a teacher since 2003. Along with AVID, Katja teaches all levels and all grades of Mathematics.
Katja likes to attend concerts during her free time. She also likes to read and travel, specifically road trips. Something interesting about Katja is that she has a green tooth. She also shares a birthday with another AVID teacher of ours, Eric McLean. |
Maria CochranAVID Elective TeacherMaria Cochran was born in Tecate, Mexico and raised in Pomona, California. She attended Garey High School. After completing high school, Maria attended the University of California, Riverside where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science. She earned her Masters in Education at National University. Along with AVID, Maria teaches Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, and Math 1. She has been teaching for 18 years.
Some of Maria’s hobbies include reading, going out for walks, playing tennis and gardening. Maria likes to play mixed-doubles in tennis competitively with her husband. When she’s not out on the tennis court she likes to dress up and go out for a nice dinner. She enjoys real-estate projects and has a real-estate license. |
Edward GonsalvesAVID Elective TeacherEdward Gonsalves was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. Edward began his undergraduate at College of the Desert and then transferred to California State University of San Bernardino. He earned his teaching credential at National University. Along with AVID, Edward teaches all levels and grades of English Literature except for IB Literature. Before teaching, Edward was a substitute teacher for two years and has now been teaching for ten years.
During Edward’s free time, he enjoys riding dirt bikes and coaching baseball. When Edward retires he wants to learn how to play the banjo. He met his wife while substituting for her school. Edward is a very quiet person who likes his privacy. Even though he acts optimistic, Edward is actually pessimistic. |
Jaime HiraokaAVID Elective TeacherJaime Hiraoka was raised in Torrance, California. She attended UCR where she obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. After completing her undergraduate, she earned her Master’s Degree at National University. Jaime also teaches Biology, Honors Biology, and Anatomy. Jaime has been an educator for 14 years now.
Jaime is very passionate about the AVID program and truly believes that all students can succeed. She loves the challenge of guiding freshman to help them build an AVID foundation that they can use throughout high school and beyond in college. She is also the president of the Tyler and Lily fan club, also known as her kids. She enjoys running during her free time. Jaime hopes to travel to every single National Park in the United States and skydive. |
eric mcleanAVID Elective TeacherEric McLean was born and Anaheim and lived in Southern California his whole life. Eric completed his undergraduate at Whittier College earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a minor in Spanish. He received his teaching credential from Cal Poly Pomona and earned his Master’s Degree from Brandman University. Besides AVID, Eric also teaches World History. In the past, he used to teach US History, Government, and Economics. Eric has been a teacher for eight years now.
During Eric’s free time, you can catch him at Disneyland with his wife and kids. He also likes to watch Notre Dame football. Eric has participated in the show Wipeout. |
Nicole RobertsAVID Elective TeacherNicole Roberts was born and raised in Riverside, California. She is John W North High School alumni. After graduating high school in 1997, Roberts attended the University of Austin Texas and graduated in 2001. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, History and American Studies. Along with AVID, she teaches Math 1s1, Biology, Earth Science, and World Literature. Nicole has been teaching for 12 years and coaching for 16 years.
When Nicole has free time, she will either be reading or watching Disney movies. She will also spend her free time on the track field coaching hurdles. Nicole competed in the Junior Olympics in Havana, Cuba. Nicole’s motto is “Once a Husky, always a Husky.” |
Enrique SanchezAVID Elective TeacherEnrique Sanchez used to live in La Puente, California. He then moved to Moreno Valley when he was 14 years old. He now currently resides in Riverside, California. Enrique began his undergraduate at Riverside Community College later transferring to the University of California, Riverside. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics for Secondary School Teaching. He also obtained a Master’s Degree in Education. Besides AVID, Enrique teaches all levels of math as well. He has been an educator for 5 years now.
When Enrique has free time, he enjoys going for runs or playing sports, specifically baseball. He also got a chance to meet the comedian, Fluffy, in real life. |
